Previously, this phenomenon was observed in New Zealand and Australia over the past month and is said to be the after result of the Hunga Tonga–Hunga Ha’apai volcanic eruption in January 2022.

As a result of the Tonga volcano eruption’s “afterglow,” the residents of Antarctica were treated to blazing pink and purple skies. The eruption allegedly produced a brilliant stratospheric spectacle. The Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai volcanic eruption in January 2022 is believed to be the cause of this anomaly, which has also recently been seen in Australia and New Zealand. Once they realised this, the local scientists informed New Zealand’s National Institute of Water and Atmospherics of the phenomenon (Niwa).

According to Stuart Shaw, an Antarctica New Zealand science technician stationed at Scott Base for the winter, “Usually in mid-winter, Antarctica is practically continuously black, save for a small “nautical twilight” at roughly midday, which means the horizon is faintly visible in favourable conditions.” He continued by saying that this year they were treated to a really impressive display. The majority of the station staff ran outside with their cameras and grabbed their jackets to take pictures of the incredibly lovely colours.

In the meantime, the citizens of Zhoushan city, China, experienced eerie blood-red sky earlier, which caused alarm. Videos revealed dense layers of fog and a crimson-colored sky over the port city. According to reports, the sky was reddest towards the port areas. According to the Global Times, residents videotaped the sky turning blood red from their homes, balconies, and streets.

More than 150 million people viewed the trend’s videos and images on the Chinese social media sites Sina and Weibo. The Chinese government’s handling of Covid-19 in the country was viewed by many users as a terrible sign by the occurrence.

“I’ve never witnessed anything like this. The fact that the sky can even become red truly astounds me, a user commented.
